Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Germany - a growing choice

by Ritu Chandna

Post an Indian B-Tech in Mechanical Engineering, many a students are looking forward to head to Germany for their MS. Little wonder, the growing German automobile industry has set the balls rolling. Our experts are regularly receiving queries on Germany as a study destination and it is not hard to estimate the demand of an international Masters in Mechanical Engineering in India, in say five years from now.

How eligible is a Student Profile like below for a MS in Mechanical Engineering in Germany:

Siddharth
B.tech in Mechanical Engineering - aggregate of 8.8/10
Class 12 - 95.8
Class 10 - 89.5
Work experience - One year
4 Projects - one international conference and 3 papers.
German Proficiency - Nil
Siddharth wanted to know the GRE and TOEFL scores required to get into top 10 Universities in Germany and the desired German proficiency level.

Ankita, expert counsellor at Learnhub, says, "Germany offers very specific programs in different disciplines. Offered separately as international programs, their medium of instruction is English and hence a 'no-knowledge' of German doesn't restrict you from studying there. Besides, students who apply to an international degree program are waived off from German Language Proficiency requirement."

An important thing to note while considering higher education admissions in Germany is the type of institutes.

  1. Universities - Scientifically-oriented courses
  2. Universities of Applied Sciences - Practice oriented courses
  3. College of Art, Film and Music - Art or Design-related courses

A student can opt for Universities, if he's interested in a PhD in future. Universities of Applied Sciences will suit those who seek internship and later a job in the industry; while a College of Art, Film and Music will suit you more if you wish to grow in the designing bit of the program.

Considering the example of Siddharth as an average Indian student profile, the universities in Germany seek a minimum of 70% and above as per the Indian percentage evaluation system. Besides this, a student also needs to have good GRE and TOEFL scores and research exposure enhances your chances of admission. The minimum score on the specified tests vary and cannot be specified in general. However, generally a 1200 and 80 on the GRE and TOEFL respectively is considered to be a good score. In case, a student is appearing for a university that demands knowledge of German language, DSH and TestDAF are popular language tests one can opt for.

Top 5 Universities in Germany for Mechanical Engineering

1 University of Applied Sciences Ingolstadt MS Applied Computational Mechanics
2 Esslingen University of Applied Sciences MS Design and Development in Automotive and Mechanical Engineering
3 Ravensburg Weingarten University of Applied Sciences International Master's program in Mechatronics
4 University of Siegen MS Mechtronics
5 University of Wuppertal MS Computational Mechanical Engineering
