Germany eases visa rules for skilled workers from non-EU countries

Germany is facing a shortage of highly qualified specialists and skilled workers in many hi-tech fields. To overcome this situation, Germany has eased the restrictions on migration of some professional groups from non-EU countries that made it more difficult to find work in the country.

It is for the first time since 1970 when the German Government has agreed with the industry and union leaders over easing the immigration law.

The new concept, which was introduced by the government, will exempt mechanical and electrical engineers, automobile constructors and medical professional from a requirement that German companies can recruit them only when qualified and suitable candidates are not available within the country or in the EU.

Angela Merkel, Chancellor said, German companies who want to recruit those specialist from non-EU countries do not require to submit such certification from the Federal Labour Office.

Merkel also said government's concept is a two-sided strategy to handle the shortage of specialists by giving opportunity to the potential available within the country and by making the country more attractive for specialist from non-EU countries.

German Institute for Labour Market and Research estimated that the country is going to face major shortage of around 6.5 million specialists and skilled workers by 2025, and if the government will not take any necessary measures to deal with this situation the country will face major problem. To curb this situation the government needs to produce skilled professionals within the country and attract skilled professionals from outside also.

This open hand policy of German government provided opportunities to the job-seekers from East European members of EU and helped a bit to improve the situation because the arrival of workers so far were mainly in the low-wage segment, the studies revealed.

Presently, the country is facing shortage of specialists and skilled workers in the field of mathematics, information technology and natural science and it has reached to its highest level of 150,000 vacancies, according to the estimates of the Federal Labour Office.
